A trio of stories following the career of elite New Republic/Galactic Alliance sniper Jarico Whan and his encounters with the Jedi Knight Marisa Fenn while on his many missions for his superiors. Their first encounter takes them to the Yuzhan Vong occupied world of Commonore, where they and a Yuzhan Vong Supreme Commander are to seek the surrender of the Vong garison or defeat the Vong and their living weapons. But the Supreme Commander is killed by the garison commander, and Whan and Fenn are forced to flee and arrange resistance amongst the Commonorian natives to overthrow the garison.

In their second encounter, Fenn is sent to negotiate with the dictator of Belsavis, trying to convince the tyrant to rejoin the Galactic Alliance and respect the civil rights of his people. Whan is already on planet with orders to assassinate the dictator, but his assignment is blown, and Fenn is forced to assist the sniper to flee the Belsavis police. Whan and Fenn leave safely in Whan's x-wing, but are forced to quickly stop at an Imperial planet to refuel because of the limited supplies aboard the x-wing, at which point they once again separate.

The third encounter is when Whan requests assistance of the Jedi to help and free his home planet from Hutt enslavement. But Whan is seriously injured during the battle, and the wounds can't be healed by bacta or surgery. He's forced to retire, and the Jedi hire him as a military consultant, and he and Fenn make their relationship official, just before the arrival of Jacen Solo's murderous reign of terror tears the GA apart.
